NAGA Elegant qin gathering invitation

August 2004

Dear Qin Friends:

The North American Guqin Association (NAGA) will hold a small guqin yaji (elegant qin gathering) on Sunday, August 1st at 2:00pm. Qin players from different countries and different states will attend. You can play qin, chat about qin, meet qin friends face to face instead of online, listen to qin music by different players, probably from different teachers or schools, play instruments made by various qin makers, and exchange information on qin. The venue will be the Union City Library.

At each NAGA yaji, we are fortunate to be joined by masters or by qin enthusiasts from out of state or from abroad. At this yaji, we are honoured to have Lui Pei Yuan and Yin Qiying attend.

Lui Pei Yuan, a pipa master and qin player of the Mei'an School. Mr Lui has served on the faculty of Hong Kong Music Conservatory, Brown University and the Center for World Music in Berkeley. For more than 20 years, Mr. Lui has performed the music and theme songs for nearly two hundred movies.

Yin Qiying, a guzheng master. Mr Yin is a first generation student of the guzheng at the Conservatory under various guzheng masters; in the 1950s, he received the golden award from the World Youth Party; he has been a hermit for many years and rarely attends any musical activities.

Some professional players of other instruments will come and play their specialist instruments.

The qin gathering is open to anyone interested in guqin music. Players of other instruments, especially xiao, and singers are especially welcome. We can enjoy doing some experimentation.

The theme and main topic of discussion at this yaji will be the guqin in the West, especially in the US. Every player is asked to introduce themselves and their qin life, and mention anyone they know in the West, especially in the US, who devotes their life to the guqin, so as to help bring together people who are interested in the guqin or want more information.

During this yaji Wang Fei, Director of NAGA and council member of the China Guqin Committee, will talk about how to register for and attend the First National Guqin Competition and the National Guqin Conference, both of which will take place in Beijing, China in late August. This is an opportunity both to meet qin players and masters from all over the world and to see firsthand the beauty of Beijing. For serious inquiries, please email her at qin@feiwang.com to obtain information and an application form.

Since space is very limited, please reserve your place and tell us which pieces you intend to play at http://www.chineseculture.net/guqin/byajilist.html. This event is free of charge to the public but priority to approved NAGA members (who also receive this same email from qinexam-list@lists.guqin.org).Many non-members receive this email through our mailing list(join@guqin.org). If you would like to apply for NAGA membership, please register at http://www.guqin.org and fill out in full the form at http://www.chineseculture.net/guqin/joinus.html so you won't miss many valuable information.

As with any performance, and in order to respect this high form of culture, please do not consume food or drink(except the speakers), nor enter or leave during the performances or talks. Please do not bring children under the age of 10 or animals.

The guqin

The guqin, a seven-stringed zither, is the oldest Chinese stringed instrument, with a history of some 3000 years: longer than that of any other instrument in use today.
Confucius used the guqin as a tool to teach scholars and literati the cultural, aesthetic, and political philosophies which shaped the way people thought for the majority of China's history. As a result of the many political upheavals in Chinese history, especially the Cultural Revolution, the guqin has become an endangered instrument. It is unknown to most people - even to the vast majority of Chinese.

Unfortunately, there are very few people, even in China, who have truly mastered this instrument and are capable of transmitting its performance tradition.

North American Guqin Association

Historically, guqin societies have always been regional. The North American Guqin Association is located in the San Francisco Bay Area. It was founded by the Three Wang Sisters: Wang Wei, Wang Fei and Annie Wang. Since guqin players are few and far between, we are using new technology to promote the ancient arts and unite qin players and aficionados worldwide. Our goal is to introduce guqin music, exchange guqin information, make qin friends, offer guqin lessons, arrange and give guqin performances and so on. We hope qin players and qin aficionados around the world can communicate through our interactive web site. Master guqin players and scholars Li Xiangting, Gong Yi, Xu Jian and Zheng Minzhong, Wu Zhao and Chen Changlin are our advisers.

If you would like to find out more about the guqin, or hear guqin music online, please visit the North American Guqin Association web site at www.guqin.org or send email to info@guqin.org.
