Poetry of the T'ang Dynasty & Music of the Guqin

February 24th, Half Moon Bay Library

Poetry and guqin are two of the arts of the Chinese ancient scholars.

On Friday, February 24th at 7 pm the Half Moon Bay Library will host a program entitled ˇ°Poetry of the T'ang Dynasty & Music of the Guqin.ˇ± This program will feature Wang Fei on the guqin and will be an excellent opportunity to hear her exquisite playing. She has performed internationally, and the Bay Area is fortunate to have such a talent reside here. Fred Pohlmann will recite poems and talk about the T'ang Dynasty and its poetry using the life of Du Fu to give the presentation a narrative framework.

Chinese culture has a longstanding history of encouraging its scholars and officials to engage in writing poetry. Playing the guqin was one of the traditional four scholarly arts. Many poets and painters were guqin players, and many poems and paintings reference the guqin. The combination of poetry and guqin music in an evening program such as the one on the 24th will be fitting indeed. The North American Guqin Association's (NAGA) inclusion of poetry into its monthly yajis and its more recent experimental project of converting Chinese poems into English song lyrics are among its ongoing efforts to expose its members and the public to Chinese art forms.
